There are some digital denoising systems which can significantly reduce the level of audible noise without introducing unacceptable side-effects, and I'll be covering such plug-ins in a later article, but first I'd like to explore the more basic techniques of gating and expansion. In a properly set up studio these noises should be very low in level, but if they aren't then you'll probably have to deal with them using processing. It's a sad fact that unwanted hiss and hum didn't vanish with the passing of analogue tape, because these noises are often part of the source being recorded. Following on from our discussion of compression and limiting last month, let's look at how you can use the related processes of gating and expansion within your DAW.
